SDSC Planned Maintenance – core NFS server replacement – 5 Nov 2016, 08:00-13:00

[Update, 15:10] All systems are up and services restored. Please contact support with any quesitons or problems.

[Update, 14:02] Permissions problems were solved. Due to the migration of fileserver from Solaris to Linux, some default ownership changed needed to new values. Also, some networking changes needed to be changed.

[Update, 13:10] Many systems are back online, but we are diagnosing some issues starting web servers due to permissions issues.

[Update, 12:19] Data transfer has finished and staff is in the process of remounting and booting downed systems

[Update, 10:29] Data transfer is running as expected and the estimated completion time is still 13:00.

[Update, 08:49, 5 Nov 2016] The first unmount pass has been completed. This will attempt to unmount the cavern filesystems on all systems without requiring a shutdown/reboot. A second pass will be made and systems unable to unmount will be shut down.

As previously communicated to custodians, our expected outage window is now 08:00-13:00. Updates will be posted here as the work progresses.

On Saturday, 5 November 2016, between 8am and 8pm, SDSC will be migrating core ‘cavern’ NFS filesystem services to a new server. To facilitate the final data synchronization, all ‘cavern’ NFS services will be disabled and clients shut down. The list of affected systems is at the bottom of this email. In addition to the systems listed, other services such as hosted websites, databases, FTP, all UNIX workstations, and locally processed email will be affected.

Once the data is copied and the new server is online, we will power back on all systems and verify operation.

We understand this is a significant outage and the team is working to minimize the downtime and impact. We chose the Saturday maintenance period to provide less impact to customer services. Also, as the twelve hour maintenance window was chosen as a conservative estimate, a more precise schedule will be emailed and posted by November 3rd.

Before, during and after the maintenance, please continue to refer to the SDSC status page at http://status.sdsc.edu.
